Play Without Limits
Play Without Limits: A New Resource for Adaptable and Inclusive Games
Play is often defined as process-oriented rather than goal-driven, meaning it is freely chosen, intrinsically motivated and enjoyable. Through playful activities, we can cultivate essential skills, from creativity and problem-solving to social connection and emotional regulation. With just a few thoughtful adjustments, games can become both fun and fully inclusive. When there are multiple ways to engage, accessibility is no longer an add-on; instead, it becomes woven into the experience of play itself. In 2025, a group of Master of Education students at the University of Lethbridge set out to design a collection of games with two central commitments: inclusion and adaptability. As part of their project, students intentionally built games that welcome diverse play styles, support multiple ways to participate, and are flexible to individual needs.
A key part of the process was seeing the games come to life in real community settings. The students had the opportunity to test and share their games at two events: a field trip to Piikani Nation Secondary School and a public carnival hosted by Building Brains Together. These experiences provided authentic feedback from players and families, opportunities for real-time observation, and the chance to refine the game designs based on what worked best for the community.
We are now excited to share the outcomes of this project through a new activities guide booklet. For each game, readers will find:
· Step-by-step instructions on how to play each game
· An explanation of the executive function skills the game is intended to engage (e.g., inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, working memory)
· Adaptability features that support access and participation across ages, abilities, and contexts
We hope this booklet helps educators, families, and community groups bring more inclusive play into their spaces and spark new game ideas. You can access the booklet here: https://www.buildingbrains.ca/more-resources
